A casino and hotel inside Expo 67 pavilions on an island in the St Lawrence
In a nightThe building stands on an island, so water is its nearest neighbour on every side. Lit from inside, the stacked glass levels of the old pavilion read from the far bank as one bright shape on dark ground. Bridges and the river carry every approach to it.
In a seasonThe island changes around the building far more than the building changes. Summer brings the parkland, the rowing basin and the racing circuit into use, and winter empties them and leaves the river locked in ice. The pavilion holds its own climate through both, with restaurants and live programming inside.
In a lifetimeThe structure was built as a national pavilion for Expo 67 on Ile Notre-Dame, an island made for that exhibition. After the fair the pavilions remained standing without their original purpose. The casino later took them over and converted the interiors, so a hotel and several stacked levels now occupy an exhibition building never meant to last.

Fallsview Casino Resort

A resort built into the gorge wall above Niagara Falls, with the water directly below
In a nightFloodlights pick out the falls after dark, and the building faces them from the crest of the gorge. Spray drifts up the rock face and settles on the glass. Inside, the theatre, spa and dining levels are stacked into the slope, so much of the resort lies below its own entrance.
In a seasonSummer fills the parkway and the viewing platforms, and winter leaves the mist to freeze on railings and trees beside the resort. The falls run all year without pause. What shifts with the season is exposure, because the spray reaches further up the gorge in some months than in others.
In a lifetimeThe resort opened in the early 2000s, late in the long history of building along the Niagara gorge. It was placed on the escarpment above the falls rather than at their edge, which is why it is entered from above and descends internally. The parkland along the gorge was protected from development long before the resort arrived.
Before the tripThe site is steep, so expect stairs, lifts and level changes between the street and the water view.

River Rock Casino Resort

A waterfront resort near Vancouver with its own marina on an arm of the Fraser
In a nightWater lies on one side and the airport flight path on the other, so the building is bracketed by movement. Marina lights hold steady while the river slides past them. Inside, the show theatre, restaurants and spa keep the volume of the place away from the shoreline itself.
In a seasonThe Fraser estuary drives the year here: fog through the colder months, long light in summer, and boat traffic that thickens and thins along with it. Richmond around the resort is flat, built on delta ground. The marina fills in the warm season and goes quiet when the fog closes in.
In a lifetimeThe resort was built on Richmond's waterfront, on delta land that carried farms and canneries long before it carried buildings of this size. Its marina, theatre and hotel were planned together as a single complex rather than added to one another over decades. The surrounding district has since filled in around it with transit lines and towers.
Before the tripThe airport is close, which makes the resort easy to reach and clearly audible from outside.

Casino Rama Resort
Rama, Canada
A resort on Chippewas of Rama First Nation land beside Lake Couchiching in Ontario
In a nightLake Couchiching is the dark edge of the site once the sun is down, and the resort's own lighting is the only thing for some distance. Entertainment hall, kitchens and spa are gathered under one long roof. Beyond the car parks the ground returns to trees and shoreline.
In a seasonCouchiching freezes, and everything on and around it changes with that: boats in summer, ice and snow cover in winter. Golf on the property follows the same calendar. The resort runs through both halves of the year, so the contrast is between a busy building and a strongly seasonal landscape.
In a lifetimeThe resort stands on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and was developed as a First Nations enterprise rather than as an outside venture placed there. Concert hall, hotel and spa grew together into one lakeside complex. Rama itself is a community whose history on this shore is far longer than the resort's.
Before the tripThis is rural Ontario, and the drive up from Toronto is long enough to plan around daylight.
